01 CONTEXT

How to design for more access and less ownership?
In India, rapid urbanization has caused an exodus of people from the rural to the urban areas in search of employment.
This is due to the seasonal nature of employment in the rural economies or because of insufficient savings.
Hence, the largest number of migrant workers are employed in the informal economy, especially in the construction sector.
They migrate to cities and live in bare minimum conditions, without social or financial security. Often exploited as they lack skill and knowledge, they work overtime in extreme conditions at a low daily wage. Migrants with limited resources often face pressure to meet even basic financial obligations.

The cycle of earning and spending for survival needs leaves no room for personal wellbeing and future planning. Adding to the stress of heavy loans, workers indulge in alcohol and gambling, which act as big drains to the earned money.

02 IDENTIFY

Following an initial secondary research, we built a questionnaire for conducting interviews with migrants in our locale. After a month of connecting with the migrants, at different hours and sharing a meal with them- we assembled all our observations and categorized them as below.

03 PERSONAS

Based on the observations, we derived insights that were the foundation of the three personas of our core users which we developed.

04 SYSTEM MAP

This map highlights the cycle of debt faced by the migrants and their journey through accessibility battles.

05 STAKEHOLDER MAP

Our map guided us towards the most influential entities for our project and their relationship with one another.

06 HOW MIGHT WE?

As an exercise, these questions allowed us to see the larger picture and look for meaningful opportunities.

07 CONCEPTS

After studying the banking sector and previous models to aid low income groups, we narrowed our paths to the 3 below.

08 EXPERT INTERVIEWS

In order to ensure we were not overlooking any potential barriers to our solution, we proposed our ideas to two experts in the respective fields of Fintech and Public Policy.

09 BUSINESS MODEL CANVAS

We relooked at our ideas and decided to move forward with individual to investments based banking as forming groups would lead to biases and stereotypes to come to the forefront.
